The Mi 6X smartphone has been launched by Xiaomi at an event at Wuhan University, the alma mater of CEO Lei Jun. The new Mi 6X smartphone, which is expected to be launched as the Mi A2 with stock Android UI in India, has a familiar design, AI integration in the camera, and Android 8.1 Oreo-based custom skin. The handset is widely expected to be unveiled as the Mi A2 in the Indian market soon, now that the Mi A1 has gone out of stock in the country. The Mi 6X/ Mi A2 is also the second smartphone by the company to come pre-installed with the new Xiao AI.

Design and Display

Mi6x has an ultra-thin body that has a thickness of 7.3mm, for this Xiaomi had to cut down the 3.5mm audio jack feature.

The backside of the phone features u-shaped antenna lines on the top and bottom edges. The vertical dual camera setup and fingerprint reader reside on the rear of the phone. The topside of the Mi 6X features an IR blaster while the bottom side has a USB-C port that separates the two external speakers. Since the smartphone features a full screen design, it is equipped with an 18:9 aspect ratio IPS LCD display of 5.99 inches. The screen delivers Full HD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels.

Camera

The dual camera setup present on the back panel of the Mi 6X includes an f/1.75 aperture Sony IMX486 sensor with a pixel size of 1.25μm and a secondary 20-megapixel front-facing camera that features an f/1.75 aperture Sony IMX376 sensor with a pixel size of 2μm. The secondary sensor is a telephoto lens that offers 2x loseless zoom.

The dual cameras have been optimized to enhance the sharpness of the portrait shots by automatically switching to 12-megapixel camera as the main sensor during the day time and at night, it makes use of the 20-megapixel camera as the main sensor to capture images with more light. With AI onboard, the dual rear cameras can recognize up to 206 kinds of scenes with different optimizations to snap richer photos. Also, it can perform real-time translations for English, French, German Japanese, Korean, and Indian languages.

For shooting selfies, it features Sony IMX376 20-megapixel front camera. It is equipped with a soft-light LED flash. The pre-AI allows the front-facing camera to shoot best quality selfie shots as it can recognize 12 kinds of self-portrait scenes. Other features of the front camera of Mi 6X include AI Beauty and AI night self-timer. Lastly, the front camera can be also used for unlocking the phone through face scanning.

Performance

Under the hood the smartphone is powered by the octa-core Snapdragon 660 SoC (four 2.2GHz Kyro 260 cores + four 1.8GHz Kyro 260 cores) and Adreno 512 GPU.  The Snapdragon 660 that features an Artificial Intelligence Engine (AIE) powers the Xiaomi Mi 6X. On AnTuTu, the Mi 6X has scored 139,697 points and it delivers 79 percent better performance than the Mi 5X that is fueled by Snapdragon 625. There is a 64 GB Mi 6X model with 4 GB of RAM and 6 GB of RAM. Its 128 GB model has 6 GB of RAM. The Mi 6X is packed with 3,010 battery that includes support Quick Charge 3.0 18W fast charging. By charging it for only 30 minutes, the phone can gain 50 percent power. It is also equipped with AI smart powering function.

The Android 8.1 Oreo OS is preinstalled on the phone and it is overlaid with MIUI 9.5 which brings support for full screen gestures. Also, it comes with Xiao AI voice assistant that was introduced with Mi MIX 2S in the previous month. The Xiao AI feature is exclusively available for Mi Phones in China.

 The handset can be availed in multiple colors like Cherry Pink, Red Flame, Glacier Blue, Quicksand Gold, and Black Stone.

Pricing and Availability

The Mi 6X price has been launched in three variants, differing with each other in terms of storage and RAM. The 4GB RAM and 64GB storage option is priced at CNY 1,599 (roughly . 16,900), while the 6GB RAM and 64GB storage option costs CNY 1,799 (approximately ₹. 19,000). As for the top end Mi 6X variant with 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage, the price tag is CNY 1,999 (around ₹. 21,000). It will go on sale in China starting 10am local time on Friday, April 27.
