In its latest financial reports, Huawei has revealed a rather surprising figure of phone shipments. Surprisingly In May, the company entered the US government’s Entity List, which prevented it from launching new devices with the full range of Google apps and services including the Play Store. The US government’s preventive measures have led Huawei to cancel or at most reject the launch of the Mate 30 flagship series in Israel, Europe and other countries.

So how did Huawei manage to see revenue growth and phone shipments in the third quarter despite the “sanctions”?

At the time of publication of the company’s financial statements, the best estimate for this was the company’s domestic market in China. With the release of the reports, Huawei revealed that it had sent 67 million phones to the global market during the quarter, a figure which represents an annual growth of 29% year on year.

Now we get a better picture with the release of Canalys new market survey on phone shipments of the various manufacturers in the Chinese market, which not only demonstrates where it achieved high growth but also shows that Huawei was the only company that managed to show growth in China in the third quarter.

According to the data, Huawei shipped 41.5 million handsets in the Chinese market during the third quarter, indicating that the Chinese market accounted for 62% of the company’s total phone shipments in the quarter. The data shows that Huawei is not only the only top 5 company on the list that managed to show year-over-year growth, but also that growth was very significant (66% +), leading it to hold about 42% of the Chinese phone market in that quarter.

The growth of Huawei and Honor brands in China has been going on for a long time and this is not the first quarter where it is showing excess growth over competitors in its home country, but at this stage, the company’s future in the global market is still unclear.
