2020 was a successful year for OnePlus. In addition to the popular 8-series, OnePlus also entered the mid-budget segment with Nord. Camera

The knowledge and skills of the Japanese Sony and the Swedish Hasselblad were used in the development of the camera. OnePlus has been working with SLR camera builder Hasselblad for the next 3 years to improve both the software and hardware of its phones in the field of photography. This year the software has already been thoroughly overhauled. The most important achievement is the improved colour calibration, which makes the colours in the photos more natural and faithful. The OnePlus 9 has 3 cameras and the OnePlus 9 Pro has four. The camera modules are structured as follows:

  • A 50MP Sony IMX766 wide-angle lens. This lens has the largest sensor ever used by OnePlus, so the images should in theory be very sharp. Due to the so-called Freeform lens, there are hardly any distortions on the side. This camera lens is also used for the close-ups
  • A 48MP main camera. The chip that both phones use differs. In the 9 you will find the Sony IMX689 and in the 9 Pro, the IMX789. The IMX789 offers several professional options, such as 12 bit RAW photos. Also special is the Dual Native ISO; a photo in 2 different ISO values, which are combined into one photo. Also new is the Digital Overlap HDR, in which a short and long exposure time are combined. At dusk, you benefit from the 2×2 on-chip lens, which allows each pixel to focus very quickly, resulting in a fast focus.
  • An 8MP telephoto lens on the 9 Pro, with which you can zoom optical 3.3x.
  • A 2MP monochrome camera for an extra beautiful black and white effect.

Also in the video field, the phones do not disappoint, thanks to the possibility to record 8K videos in 30 fps, or 4K videos in 120 FPS in HDR. The selfie camera is identical on both devices and is a 16 MP full-frame copy with HDR support.

Display

The OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro both have a 120 Hz display. The size and resolution of the display differ. The OnePlus 9 has a 6.55-inch screen with a 2,220 x 1,080 resolution and a maximum brightness of 1,100 NITS, the OnePlus 9 Pro has a 6.7-inch screen with a 3,216 x 1,440 resolution and a maximum brightness of 1,300 NITS. The 9 Pro uses the so-called Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide (LTPO) technology. This piece of hardware automatically adjusts the refresh rate to the application you are running. When you view photos, the screen is refreshed a little (10 Hz) and when you are gaming, the screen is refreshed a lot (120 Hz). This leads to lower energy consumption of the screen. The 9 Pro also has a very high touch sensitivity of 360 Hz, for extremely fast response speed, which is useful for gaming, for example. HDR10 + is supported on both screens.

Performance

Both devices are true powerhouses. The devices run on the new Snapdragon 888 processor with 8GB or 12GB LPDDR5 memory. The performance is 25% higher than the previous version of this processor. The graphics are even 35% faster. At the same time, the processor has become more energy efficient. 5G is of course standard and supported worldwide. The devices both come in a 128 GB or 256 GB UFS 3.1 variant.

Charging Speed

OnePlus has always belonged to the absolute top when it comes to fast charging. Warp Charge 65T charges a device from 1 – 100% in just 29 minutes. Both the 9 and the 9 Pro have a 4,500 mAh battery. Wireless charging is required. With the OnePlus 9 this goes with 15W and with the 9 Pro with 50W, where you can charge the last device completely wirelessly in 43 minutes. This can be done both horizontally and vertically. Unlike some competitors, OnePlus does include a charger. This charger is powerful enough to also charge other devices, such as laptops and tablets. Finally, it is possible to charge other devices wirelessly with your device.

Software

The devices run on the latest version of Android. OnePlus guarantees at least 2 years of Android updates and at least 3 years of security updates. In addition to Android, the devices run on OxygenOS 11. This user interface is very comfortable to use but requires some getting used to when you switch from another brand.

New is the Turbo Boost 3.0 memory optimization, which allows you to keep more than 25% more apps open than before. The Pro Gaming Mode is useful for gamers, with which you can temporarily optimize the CPU and GPU and block all incoming notifications and calls.

The OnePlus 9 series will be available this spring. Both the OnePlus 9 and the OnePlus 9 Pro have an 8 GB + 128 GB variant and a 12 GB + 256 GB variant. The OnePlus 9, 8 GB costs 49,999 INR . The OnePlus 9 Pro 8 GB costs 64,999 INR.
