Xiaomi has launched the Redmi 5, the successor to best-selling compact smartphone Redmi 4 India. .The handset is claimed to be an improvement in terms of design, camera and performance. The handset is part of Xiaomi’s Make in India initiative and will be manufactured in India

Xiaomi Redmi 5 comes in three storage variants  2GB RAM with 16GB internal storage that comes at ₹ 7,999, the second variant is priced at ₹ 8,999 that offers 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage and lastly, the 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage variant is priced at ₹ 10,999.

The device is powered by a 1.8GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor and is backed by a 3300mAH battery and is claimed to last more than 9 hours for continuous usage of gaming. The Standby time of the device is 17 days.

Redmi 5 comes with a 12MP rear camera with 1.25 micron pixel similar to Redmi Note 5 and Note 5 Pro smartphones from Xiaomi. On the front, there is a 5MP camera along with a dedicated LED flash light. Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.2, GPS/ A-GPS, and a 3.5mm audio jack. Sensors on board the Redmi 5 include accelerometer, ambient light sensor, gyroscope, and proximity sensor. It measures 151.8×72.8×7.7mm and weighs 157 grams.

It has reinforced corners that is claimed to help the handset be more durable and less prone to breakage in case of accidental drops. The Redmi 5 has the dual pyrolytic sheet that is optimized for heat dissipation in the Indian environmental conditions.

It runs on Android Nougat-based MIUI 9 and comes in four colour options — Black, Gold, Rose Gold and Blue.

All handsets will be available starting next week online on mi.com and Amazon India website and offline on Mi Home stores. As part of launch offers, Reliance Jio is offering a  Rs 2,200 cashback on the purchase of the Redmi 5. Also there is a 5% cashback for SBI card holders.

The first Flash sale will begin at 12 PM, 20 March.
